Numeracy for living life and employment
Our work around numeracy is based on working with our clients on benefits, household budgeting and employed/self-employed ensuring they manage their day-to-day finances are not worse off as result of obtaining the right benefits or being employed/self-employed.
This will involve working with them in helping them work out what they may be entitled to, looking at their incomings and outgoings and monitoring how they are managing.
A lot of our clients have had a poor education, or families tend to take over due to their disabilities.
As we work on one-to-one appointments, a lot of what we do is interactive e.g. talking to them listening to them and formulating a plan in a way that works for them. Sometimes paper base may work better for those who have difficulty with technology whilst indeed some may use phones computers and/or calculators.
Due to the needs of some of our clients we must work in an unconventional way to help them understand the situation. An example of this is one of our clients with autism relates to a cake when trying to understand a situation. We will relate numbers into dividing a cake up and how many pieces they may have left, including the costings of ingredients and profits that could be made. Likewise, in working with them on looking for employment/self-employment we will of course offer support arounds this, but we will look at whether they will be better off or worse off in being employed. Regarding self-employment business plans are usually required in which you are expected to produce forecasts and income and expenditure, and these are seen as living documents so need to be adapted as circumstances change. In all cases a discussion will take place and then compiled in a way that our clients can understand and access. Please note that we work in a person-centred way and so work in a way that works best for our clients and their needs.
